Default How to maximize your Phase 1 area

We've often talked about flying circles during Phase One. Looks like Randy Hooper and his beautiful new RV-8 is getting the most out of his test area!

(50 miles centered on Shelbyville, SYI)

APRS tracking is a fantastic safety enhancement while shaking out a new plane.

who determines phase 1 areas? i ask because i've seen several recently completed lancair legacies get the state of oregon for a phase 1 area. They can't be THAT much faster than a well equipped rv8

Default It depends on the speed of the aircraft.

Phase I test area is up to the DAR as long as it is reasonable.
I typically give a 75 nautical mile radius plus a couple of airports outside this area for RVs. We are somewhat flexible on this. Of course if we start giving too much area the FSDO will come down on us.
For an E-LSA I typically give a 50 mile radius.

maybe for the legacies based out of central oregon a useful area might as well be the whole state because it would include most of the willamette valley and some airports east, so they just say "oregon". We do not have very many (appropriate) airports for the fast planes within an hour to the north, south (except kfalls) and east
