kit purchase tips

i am about to buy an Rv-8 quickbuild kit minus the finishing kit from a friend here on my field. I am kind of in the dark about what kind of questions i should be asking and what documentation i should ensure he has before the purchase. how does the seriel number or registration transfer ownership. any advice or tips is welcome.
