Default Rivet gun oil ?

I have been using any spray can oil to lube the gun before and after working. WD40 and others have been used.
Can this cause long term damage? This is what Ive been told.

WD-40 IS NOT AN OIL! It is a Water-Dispersant. It will lubricate temporarily but then is leaves a residue that attracts dirt. Please do not use WD-40 as a lubricant!

I'm with Gasman. Marvel Mystery oil has kept my cheapo right angle die grinder alive for 9 years! I use a few drops on each tool, every day I use the tool.

Default air tool only, except....

I inherited a rivet gun that had sat in the toolbox for about 10 years.

Three drops of air tool oil, nothing moved.

I ended up using some wd-40, and letting it sit in various orientations for a day. Then, three drops of air tool oil, and try again.

brrrrrp.

Air tool oil is available pretty much anywhere, including Sears.
Use it.

Too much can negatively affect tool performance as well as getting you and the work surface, and surrounding area oily.
