Easy - cut away a little of the outer skin until you have clearance to dril the holes. That area will eventually be covered by intersection fairings anyway. You're welcome to stop by and have a look at my -8 any time you get into a spot where you're wonderign how it's supposed to work - and there are a few spots like that!

Default Drill access holes

I located the spot in the skin directly in line with the hole in the wear plate and drilled a small access hole, maybe 3/8 inch or so. Be sure and allow for the angle of the hole if using this technique. This hole in the skin is of no consequence as it will be covered by the intersection fairing.
