Default Landing gear material

Does anyone know if the gear legs of the 6,7,9 are plain chrome moly or spring steel. I have a aeronautical engineer friend looking into a fix for my nose gear (7A ).
Any input would be appreciated.

Unlikely to be 4130. Neal Willford's "Landing Gear Design" spreadsheet suggests 4340, 5160, or 6150, heat treated to 220,000 psi, as typical.

Exclamation The 1999 RV-6A drawings...

...version specify it as 6150, but don't give a heat treat specification.

The earlier plans (1988) specify 6150, bend to shape red hot, then heat treat and temper to 42 - 44 Rockwell "C" hardness.

Thanks for the info guys. I didn't think it would be the 4130 chrome moly, then again it may explain things if it were. My guess was 4340, I didn't even think of 6150.
I will send an email off too Langair but i have been told that replies are few and far between.

The 1999 plans AZ_Gila referred to are still correct for what is being made today.

The figure of 220,000 PSI is a little high. It is closer to 200,000 PSI tensile.
