shunt, wiring and cable protection
Well,
I mount my shunt on firewall, it is wired on P1 (alternator/shunt/cabin).
Now it's time to attach two small wire (18AWG as per plans) to connect the ammeter instrument, BUT .......
.... so I have 2 positive wire that go into the cabin without a protection ......
I think it's better to put, just after the shunt (instruments connection) one protection for each 18 awg wire
what do you think ?

Check with Bob N...
That's a good question for the AeroElectric list.

Luke - my certified plane (Skipper) has the same arrangment with the shunt on the firewall. There are two cartridge type fuses there also to protect the wires going aft to the ammeter. I don't think it matters what you use, but you should have some sort of protection there.

I used this device to fuse both of the shunt/ammeter leads in my -8:

V drop?
Does voltage drop across the circuit protectors affect the ammeter, or does putting protection on both leads cancel it out? Or does it matter?

The voltage drop should be negligible, since there is almost no current flow through the ammeter
