Default Flight around the Smokey Mountains

Sue and I took "Miss Sue" on a short adventure yeaterday, Oct 4th. We departed Athens, GA (AHN) around 10:00 AM and headed for Asheville, NC, where we flew between Mt. Pisgah and Shining Rock Wilderness Area. The colors were pretty good at high altitude (near 6000 feet) and on ridgetops. (camera does not do it justice) The next two weeks should be great! On toward Gatlinburg, TN, and right over Cataloochee Ski Area at Maggie Valley where I learned to ski in 1968 before going off to the Army to become a pilot. The pictures give an idea, but it is amazing in 2008 in GA, NC, TN to fly over so much undevloped area. Takes me back to my Alaska flying days--seriously undeveloped in the interior!! On to Rome, GA (RMG) to give a ride and visit with friends. Back to AHN in the PM, but the clouds were out, and at 7500 ft, the ground was getting real fuzzy. The morning flight was the best

Great pictures. I made my first flight in that area yesterday when I flew from Warner Robins, GA to Franklin, NC. That was my first time flying in a mountainous environment and landing at 1A5, which is located in a fold between some ridges, was pretty cool and a neat challenge.
What an experience for a flatlander!

Isn't it fun to fly in the mountains (to those who out in the west, mountains in our area is probably just hills). Last July I flew with Dave Gamble to the Great Smoky. 24A that is a few miles north east of 1A5 typify a mountain airport in the Appalachians. It has a runway built by cutting part of the mountain top off. At 3003' (was probably 4000' and part of the old runway fell down the hill), 1.3% gradient, and surrounded by other peaks, it was fun to land.

Thanks for the pictures, Ted. 24A is having an event in a couple weeks. Looks like a neat place to land. I'll be there, weather permitting.
