Working on inspection plates for a -7... plans say to drill out to #28, then dimple for a #6 screw... I dont have a #28 drill bit... got a #27 and a #21... will one of those work?

#28 Drill
#28 is the normal size for the #6 dimple die according to my Cleaveland tool chart. You can try the #27 on some scrap and see if the male side of your die set will slide into it. If it fits without forcing it, the dimple should be okay.
Good luck,
Mike

#27 will work fine. That's what came with the Avery kit for #6 screws. Move on!

Ok, next question... the plans say to dimple the inspection plates to take a #6 screw... The drawings say to machine countersink the inspection plates... which do I do? I tried dimpling a piece of scrap, but none of them seem to be just right for the #6 screw... The only dimple that fits the #27 hole is the 1/8" dimple... but its too shallow. The 5/32 seems a tad bit too deep and the pilot wont go through the #27 hole...

I dimpled my inspection plates for #6 screws. My Avery RV toolkit came with a #6 dimple die. If you don't have one, go out and get a set. You will need it down the road.

Daniel,
One thing I learned while building was that when I caught myself saying, "I don't have the right tool but I can make such and such work." I stop right there and order the proper tool. Otherwise, I will proceed to trash the part I'm working on, order a replacement part from Van's, and ordered the correct tool.
I looked at this as a cost and time savings move. Not only would it save the cost of the replacement part but in the end, it would save me time by keeping from having to rework the part I was about to trash.

Daniel-
Do you have a caliper? I saw start measuring things (countersink pilot, drill diameter) and see what's not right.

ok... I'll see if I can figure it out. Still a little confused though, Maybe I put the dies back in the wrong place? Is there a chart that shows what size the dies are supposed to be so that I know what to look for on the calipers?

I don't know of a chart but I measured the male end of my #6 dimple die to be 0.1344" so it should fit into a hole made by any number drill <= 29. Are you sure you don't have a #8 dimple die by mistake? I measure that one to be 0.1636".
