Default Icom battery

I have an Icom IC-A5 handheld...seems that the battery has "croaked".
How long will the original rechargable battery usually last? I think the batt. is about 4 years old.

Default nicad

Glenn, I can't say how long any particular battery should last, but I've got and old Icom a22 and the nicad battery lasted for at least 15 years. I just replaced it thru a website site/company called the Nicad Lady. Was referred to them by ICOM.

Glenn, time to step up to the lithium ion replacement battery for your transceiver.

Try this:

Take the antenna off, turn on the radio and let it run down for a few hours. Then try recharging it. My radio shuts off when the power drops below a certain level which happens when the audio comes on as it receives a transmission when the battery is low. When this happens it won't fully discharge the battery because it shuts itself off while the battery still has some juice. I remove the antenna so it won't receive a transmission.

Before I tried this technique I couldn't get charge enough to work for more than half an hour.

I may have ruined the battery by leaving it on the charger constantly w/ the idea it would be full charged and ready whenever I needed it. But when I tried to use the handheld yesterday the battery had no power and shut down as soon as I turned it on. So I am trying to charge it again...hate the idea I'm going to have spend ~$70.00 on a new battery.
Thanks for the input guys.
