Default Pilot Accidentally Relays 'Hijack' Code

I just read this story on Yahoo News.

What gets me is, "FBI agents and officials from the Federal Aviation Administration questioned the pair for about two hours."

Two hours for setting the transponder to 7500 insted of 7600?

My question is, how much is the fine going to be.

Talking transponder snafu

1200, 7500, 7600, 7700. It is simply outrageous that the FAA would expect us to remember ALL FOUR squawk codes. Since I can't remember them, they are on the home-made checklist in the airplane(along with tower lights... red light, green light... oh, it's so confusing).

Don't forget airspace, Mark!

My homemade checklist for Flash has all that stuff you forget ten minutes after taking the written (pirep info, light guns, squawks, airspace info, etc). These and the checklists of course <g>.

Thank goodness for that lamenating machine at my day job .

B,

My CFI, bless his heart, taught me to set the first digit LAST when changing the transponder, precisely for this reason.
