VM 1000 Screen Freezing

We have an older(2001) VM 1000 in our -8 (man feels good to say our -8) and the screen is freezing. It reads everything for a split second and freezes on those numbers for well over 45-60 seconds. I have done a search on here and come up with just problems with individual gauges. We have also checked the data wire from the DPU to screen and it checked fine.

Now our question turns to the lithium battery in the DPU. We have found that the battery should be changed every 3-5-8 years depending on where we look. But we haven't opened it up yet to see what it looks like.

has anyone else had anything similar to this? We called the factory but like everyone else they are at KOSH and we would really like to get flying over here.
