Question Central Alabama Airport Property?

Although retirement is still quite a few years away, I still have a desire to find a nice fly-in community to buy some property. I have family in central and south Alabama. Parent lives in Ozark, Sister lives in Millbrook, and brother in Columbus, GA. I've looked at a few properties in Georgia, but would like something a little closer so the non-flying family members can visit easily.

So does anyone know of any private/semi-private airstrips near Montgomery, AL?

Anyone interested in starting one?

I'd prefer to live in a "community" as I fear becoming a hermit!

Any ideas?

Yes........stay as far away from family as possible and come to AZ. Sorry, couldn't resist.

Maybe this could be your Summer Airpark Residence, http://www.vansairforce.com/communit...light=mogollon

A friend (Bob Norwood) has an almost-ready fly-in community started in Greenville. No houses there yet. There is a small fly-in community on Lake Martin, but I know nothing about it. There's a site north of Montgomery (actually just north of Millbrook, was a WWII Gunter auxillary field) for which some of us have hopes, but that's all right now. The airport closest to Millbrook is Wetumpka (08A), which is where I base.

Contact Betty at Alabama Aviator. Betty knows everybody.

Well, it's not exactly middle Alabama, but almost. This airport property is in Georgia but very close to the state line.

Hey, Thanks Guys.

Dan, I've been by the Wetumpka airport. Sister used to live in Elmore just up from the airport.

You mentioned one of the old Auxiliary fields of Gunter Air Base. I've always found the following website useful....

http://members.tripod.com/airfields_...Montgomery.htm

The airport north of Millbrook must be the Deatsville Auxiliary Field #7? Closest I could find information was ...

Looks like a nice plot of land. I see Airport Rd, but no signs of an airport anywhere.

I'll send a note to Betty and see what kind of response I get back.

Thanks again for all the replies. If anyone else has suggestions I'm open.

I've looked at airfields in Roberta, GA and Fort Valley, GA, but like I said in a previous note, I'd like something a little closer to family.

Default Central Alabama Airports

I finally heard back from Betty...

Thank you for contacting Alabama Aviator.

There are a very few places in central Alabama. Check Commander Airpark, Wilsonville for a lot/house for sale. There is also a private airport community near Montgomery but I have not located the contact. Am saving your note for when I hear of other places.
Made a trip down to AL/GA last week and stopped by the two Georgia airparks I mentioned before. Of the two, Plane Living Skypark near Fort Valley was the nicer airpark. They both have a lot of building to do. Only a few homes are built on either one, but the the layout of Plane Living was much better.

I'm still hoping for something to happen in the middle Alabama region.

I'm really interested in what is going on at the old Tuskegee AAB site. Some group from north Atlanta has purchased the land and poured new concrete for the runway.

Is this going to be an airpark or is this just their private strip now? Anyone know?

Willow Point on Lake Martin has a private 4500' paved & lighted strip. We used to live in the next neighborhood over and we kept our airplane there on the weekends. This is a very nice neighborhood that has old and new houses. I'm not sure who you need to contact at Russell Lands about building a hangar on the airport though.

Default Lake Martin Area

Sid,

I can't remember who I talked with, but I almost choked when I saw the prices. The Realtor was very helpful, but I guess that area is just out of my price range. She sent me the airport req. document, And I really didn't even look at it after seeing the prices. I guess the market in that area has risen quickly the last few years with all the huge lake houses being built.
