Default Aquiring an "N" number

I know this is a silly question but how do you go about finding out if a certain "N" number is available and if so putting it on reserve?

I have a particular one in mind and would like to get it locked up.

Thanksk,

Prater DJ

I saw a site somewhere that you could put in the last part of the N number you want and it would give you the options. i.e. I type in "BC" and it tells me 89BC, 879BC, 996BC, etc. I'll look for it.

edit: Ain't Google great?? http://162.58.35.241/acdatabase/NNAV_inquiry.asp

Another possibility: Depending on how badly you want a particular number, find the person who has it reserved (provided it hasn't been assigned to an aircraft) and barter with him/her. I wanted a particular number for my bi-plane and the number was reserved by a fellow in Houston. I contacted him, got him another number reserved and he released N68TX to me.
