Default regulator

OK, two dumb questions here. My compressor has a regulator built onto it, but I was told I should attach one to my HVLP gun too. It came with a little regulator, but no directions for dummies like me. Which way does it go? Meaning which way does the air come in and which way does it go out? Photo below.
Second dumb question... if I had this hooked up backwards (maybe why I couldn't seem to get it to regulate) could I have damaged it?

Default Arrow?

There usually an arrow showing the direction of airflow. If not I would say the way you have it in the pic is how it should go. The top should attach to the gun and the air inlet should be on the bottom.
