Default ELT Mounting

I looked through the ELT mounting posts that I could find, but did not find anything along these lines. That makes me think we could have a case of "operator error" here.

I bought the bracket from Van's for mounting the ELT and have that installed. My question is about mounting the ELT itself on that bracket. To do that, I must install the bracket that came with the ELT on Van's bracket, using screws in the nutplates that I installed. However, the strap that holds the ELT on appears to go between the two brackets, thus not allowing the two brackets to fit together and leaving the mounting less than solid. I have ideas to fix this, mostly using shims but I wanted to query those who have gone before me to make sure I'm thinking correctly here. Am I missing something?

I used shims, Rich, to address the issue you raise. However, I didn't use Van's bracket, but I don't think it matters.

Here's how mine ended up (last post on this thread)...
