Default Flywheel ring gear

Got my prop off, noticed the ring gear is a little rough. What's the best way to deal with this? Googled it and found that Florida Aircraft and Boat sells new flywheels with the gear on for $375.
Must be a cheaper way?
Thanks,
Mark

How about just replacing the ring gear itself? I would think it would be cheaper than replacing the entire flywheel. Heat and remove. You will want to keep up with the timing mark locations.

You can remove the ring gear by cutting through it carefully with a bandsaw or hacksaw. When you get to the end of the material it will just spring off.

To install the new one, you freeze the flywheel, and heat the ring gear to about 200 degrees in your wife's oven. They fit together perfectly easily that way, and once the temps equalize it is on for good.

The ring gears cost about $70 or so.

A satisfying project for a rainy day.

Just the ring gear is a little over a hundred bones. Some guy is usually sell brand new ones on ebay for 60 or so. Make sure you get the correct number of teeth.

Cut the old one off with a die grinder using one of those metal cut off disks. Before you get to the Al flywheel make the last little bit with a dremel type tool and a very small cutoff. Just before you break the steel you can snap the last bit with a screwdriver. No cut marks on the Al that way.

To put the new one on heat the ring gear in the oven and cool the Al in the freezer. When the temps equalize the ring gear is tight on.

Know anywhere else to buy just the ring?
Thanks

www.eci2fly.com has the part for around $105.
Their resellers (J&J Airparts locally to me) sells it for $78.00
The Superior part was $3.00 cheaper, but OOS.

Call ECI or go to the website and get a list of resellers.

BTW, if your ring gear is rough, your starter pinion is probably not too snazzy either.

Having just replaced my ring gear and starter due to damage from a kickback, I feel a bit experienced.

Since I have Bendix (not slick) mags, it appears that in cold weather (dry air, etc) the Bendix will make enough spark on the right mag (while cranking) to contribute to kickback. The first kickback was enough to snap a tooth off the ring gear. I foolishly flew the plane a few more times, furthering the damage.

Lesson learned.

To prevent kickback, I wired in a jumper on my ignition switch that kills the right mag while the starter is engaged.

Just FYI.

I've got a flywheel and a 122 tooth gear in the shop that I'm never going to use...if you're interested. Replaced it with a 149 tooth rather than change the ring alone.

Default Dick Walters

I bought my flywheel and ring gear from Dick Walters for $300.00 new, Dick is very knowledgeable an all around nice guy, I had absolutely no problems getting my flywheel, it shipped when he said it would. I would buy from Dick again.
