Default Ordering a Finishing Kit

A friend of mine is in the process of ordering a finishing kit minus the cowling. The gentleman at Vans is saying that it would be a credit of only a few hundred dollars ($400), then upon calling Vans and asking how much a cowling alone costs, they are stating $1000. Has anyone ordered a finishing kit without the cowling? And how much is the actual saving minus the cowling?

I appreciate the information, thank you

Butch-

I just ordered a finish kit for a RV-7 w/o the cowl and I got a credit of $748.82.

Exclamation Cowling

Wow! What a coincidence. I just faxed my order this afternoon for my finishing kit, minus the cowling, wheel pants and leg fairings! I don't know the exact amount yet, though.

I called and spoke with Sam James today, and he will be making my cowling, etc.
It seems like I'll only spend about $200 more to have a Sam James cowling versus the Van's stock cowling. Now that's a no-brainer!
