Default Get 32 (AA) batteries for the price of 8

A pack of alkaline AA's cost about $5 retail.

(UPDATE/Edit Fake warning - thanks Mike_ExpressCT, see post below)
Did you know a 6 volt lantern battery has 32 AA's in it for about $10. Here is a vid of "hacking" a lantern battery to get 32 AA's, for cheap. Be sure to get alkaline lantern pak not one with carbon batteries. Also if you buy AA's in bulk (100 pak) you can get them cheaper than even hacking a latern battery open, but its kind of fun to stick it "to the man" (or at least think you are).

I have never done this, personally I have about 25 NiMH rechargeable AA's I run around electronics & love them. Many NiMh have 2700 mAh capacity verses a typical 1300 mAh AA alkaline. The old Ni-Cad technology gave rechargeables a bad rep, with "memory" and poor life. They where good for their day, but they are especially frustrating with their sudden death discharge rate. MiNH have none of that and the price has come down to less than $2 each. I have NiMH's that are over two years old, used constantly and still going strong. If you want cheap alkaline's, which are nice for low drain items, the lantern hack is still kind of cool, if willing to pry it apart.

Heres another cool battery hack. A tiny A23 12 volt battery gets you 8 "324" button 1.5v cells. Two A23's go for $2 and button cells cost $5 each. That is 0.13 apiece verse $5 each!

The other "battery hack" is taking a 9 volt apart. It gives up 6 AAAA battery. Quad A's are not very commonly used as singles, but they will fit in where the more common AAA battery fits in a pinch (same length smaller dia). Some 9 volts like RayOVac used special flat rectangular cells, so that brand will not work. Energizer and Duracell are both suitable to hack.

George, you better be careful- when I start musing over stuff like this, my wife rolls her eyes, and then finds work for me to do.

I've never done this, so I don't know if it works or not, but according to snopes.com:

They say it's fake.

Doha! It does follow the too good to be true motto. At the start of the Vid it shows 'gagfilms.com', which I missed. Thanks Mike_ExpressCT for the heads up. Here is a Vid that shows whats inside: Spoof Revealed

I really feel gullible, this one shows it works if you buy the right brand & HOW!: Spoof humorously revealed

Went to 'gagfilms.com' and the same narrator has a FIX scratches on CD's which clearly a stupid parody: http://gagfilms.com/CDrepair.html They got me. I wanted to believe. It was suspicious none of the cells where tied together. On the other hand there are good battery hacks, ways to rebuild battery packs cheaply. Most pre-made packs have a markup of 5 times. The A23 'hack' I don't know about. Could not find where it says its fake or phony, but this parody vid makes fun of the practicality of it: 12-Volt hack Parody

I found the Vid because I googled 6 volt battery. My Davtron M811 clock has a 6 volt back-up battery that cost about $13-$16. I figured out how to make my own pack by soldering 4 AA's or AAA's together for about $4. Works well.

I recommend NiMH rechargeables any way, no joke.
