firewall weldments - split?
Are these Powder-Coated wedlments on the corners of the firewall designed to split open along the edge, as in the photo here?

Yes, they are designed to match up with the longerons.

That seem was not welded. It was just filled up with powder coat. I had the same reaction. Many other builders have had that as well.

What Mel said.
The front section of the longeron is twisted and comes down at an angle, thus if those things were welded out to the end, they would not fit the inside of the longeron. That is why they are not weled out to the end.
