Use the Marine Heat Shrink tubing from HF on the handles. Thermal adhesive on the inside. It WILL NOT come off.

Fixes them right up

I had a standard cheep pair and needed a second pair for a Boy Scout aviation day. I bought a set on Amazon for like $18. They are VERY nice compared to the ones I had for a few yeas. They both work the same, though. Min were Zephyr K-2000; however I see the one they sell now does not have the vinyl grips. I would suggest the Brown:
