Default GX-60 Internal Battery Warning Message

While flying yesterday, I got a message on my UPS GX-60 that said something like, "Internal battery failure - turn unit off." The message went away, and the GPS-COM continued to function normally. The avionics guy at Pine Bluff, AR said that he would have to send it off to Garmin himself. When I called Garmin, the tech guy said that this message actually did not indicate a need for replacing the battery, but rather indicated a more serious need for a "major repair," since the unit was probably sensing an overvoltage condition within itself. The major repair would cost a flat rate of $450 and would take three to five days. I'm pretty much committed to doing this, since my aircraft will be down without the GPS-COM. Anyone have a similar experiance with their UPS units?
