Adding Fiberglass

I've been able to get the pink cowling mostly installed onto my 7. Whew! Lots of finish work remains. I have a few areas at the intersection of the firewall and aft cowl where the gap is a little too large. At most 1/8". Can I just add some flox to these areas and sand to shape, or do I need to make a full scarf joint? I was thinking of installing clear packing tape to the aluminum, installing the cowl, then applying flox while it's on the plane. I will leave a gap for paint, but want to make things more uniform than they are presently.
