Default Crankcase Splitter

Hey guys. I'm down to the part of splitting the crankcase on this IO-540. Do you have to buy/rent the crankcase splitter from Lycoming?

Is there another way of separating it than described in the overhaul manual?

Thanks for the help
Marc

Is the case a wide deck or narrow deck? If it's a wide deck, splitters are not necessary. With a dead blo, you can tap the cases at the starter boss and under the sump mount. There are two 7/16 alignment dowels that split the matting surface by about 1/2 inch per side.

If it's a narrow deck, it will have 1/2 dowels at the thru bolt (case bolt) locations. You will in this case need splitters.

Default Narrow Deck

Thanks Allen, yes it is a narrow deck case. Guess I'll have to break down and either buy or rent one of these tools.

Marc- Check with your EAA chapter. If it has a lot of actual builders, there's a good chance a fellow member has one you can borrow.
