how to stop exhaust hitting when starting?
My exhaust pipes keep hitting the gear weldment right when my engine first starts. I followed vans plans as to the mounting brackets but they don't do a good job holding the pipes in place during the big shake at first start.
Has anyone had this problem and found a solution?

Jeff,
Which engine, exhaust, prop, type of mount (conical, dynofocal, etc.?), type of RV (3, 4, 6, 6a, 7, 7a, 8, 8a, 9, 9a, 10, 12?).
We need more details.

Engine mounts
I suggest the Lord engine mounts for everyone. They are for a Mooney, part number: ** J-9613-40. Call Lord Corp to confirm. You want the one with the center silicon damper/spacer. It controls large scale movement when you start and shut down. This will save on wear and tear of the accessories and baffles.
(** corrected part number but as suggested call

Adjust
You need to adjust the horizontal distance between the pipes and the mount. The Van's "brackets" allow it and the ball joint in the exhaust does, too. Also, just for safety, a little RTV on the spot where it would hit can't hurt any.
