I think I figured it out.

If I use https:, I get a notice that a security credential has expired. If I use http:, I get the googley eyes /* * /

Same on iMac, HP-windows, iPad.

If I turn wifi off on my iPad and use cellular connection, it works fine.
So it is some kind of security block at my ISP I think.
