Default The Bluegrass State

It was summer RV vacation time and our best laid plans for Glacier went up in smoke for for the 2nd year in a row, so we did a last minute audible, heading south to Kentucky, for history, booze, caves, camping, and hiking.......

I took my last 2 calls of the day at the hangar while Andi packed the plane - we then launched and headed to 3TR - Niles, MI to have dinner and overnight with Mom.

Cool trip up high over the Mississippi

Sunset refueling at Niles $3.99 100LL!

South to Kentucky - Barges on the Ohio west of Cinci

Our home at 6I2 - Nicest little airport we have been to. Hot cookies, coffee, cheap avgas and great people. Showers for campers, too!

First stop - Lincoln's Birthplace - middle of nowhere, but very interesting

A hop, skip and a jump away is Maker's Mark! Fun tour with samples!

Beautiful grounds at the distillery

Default The Bluegrass State - part 2

We enjoyed a quiet night at the airport then got up early for our trip to Mammoth Cave - 400+ miles of underground fun!

We voluntarily walk into a big hole in the ground..... a 4 hour tour...a 4 hour tour...

The sights are worth it!

Default Bluegrass - Part 3

One more night at the airport and then a change of scenery to the eastern hills of Kentucky - the Red River Gorge and Natural Bridge State Park to camp and hike.

Andi liked the sheer cliffs - no guard rails here(let Darwin sort them out!)

Beautiful water carved rocks with arches perfect for hiking.

Bottom of the "natural bridge"

Beautiful views from the top of the trails....

Natural Bridge from Lookout Point

Red River far below......

It was a great little trip. Can't say enough good things about the people at 6I2 - Springfield/Lebanon and KIOB - Mount Sterling. Visit these folks, we need more FBOs and airports like them.

Weather in Minne on the way home went to ****, so we diverted to Ames, IA and "borrowed" my daughter's old CRV to drive home. We'll return it this weekend for the Cyclone opener and pick up the plane.

For some reason only a limited number of the photos are loading for me.

We spent some time in Kentucky on our way up to OSH (driving). It's a beautiful state.

I'll see if I can fix the photos tonight - it was late and I probably missed a step on some of them.

Pete, did the Maker's Mark guide tell you about the drive-by liquor store?

That's it on the left.

Default Drive By...........

Hi Dan,

I think our Guide referred to it as the "Quart House", where people would stop by to get jugs and jars "filled up"!

Neat place - Andi loved it!
