Question Bootstrap / Lowry flight testing---anyone tried it?

Hi VAF,

I'm curious if anyone has tried or has thoughts on the Bootstrap Performance Approach method described by John Lowry?

It seems like a simple way to get a good amount flight test and performance data for a RV.

If you're not familiar, there's an outline of the method described in these three articles, but I think having the book might also be important for getting some of details correct.

Bootstrap Method Part 1 - https://www.avweb.com/news/airman/182410-1.html
Bootstrap Method Part 2 - https://www.avweb.com/news/airman/182418-1.html
Bootstrap Method Part 3 - https://www.avweb.com/news/airman/182421-1.html
Book - Performance of Light Aircraft, John T. Lowry

Thanks for your thoughts!

Default Yes

Those are an excellent set of resources, and will produce good data that can be verified or refined using other flight test techniques described in AC 90-89B or other flight test resources. The procedures for fixed-pitch airplanes are very straightforward, and there was a very good article in KitPlanes describing the procedure applied to an airplane fitted with a constant speed prop.

Overall it’s a great place to start whether you are conducting Phase 1 or simply learning a “new to you” RV as a second or subsequent owner.

Cheers,

Vac
