Eagle's Nest Projects - McKinney Aviation Academy (TX)
March-2018

McKinney Aviation Academy recently received a $25,000 grant from American Airlines. After careful thought and consideration about how to best use the funds, it was agreed that the purchase of Red Bird flight simulators for the aviation classroom-airplane build lab located at TKI airport would best serve the needs of the program and the students. The tutorials provided by Red Bird were well written and the students quickly became familiar with the basic functionality of the machines. In a very short time however, it was apparent that the students needed professionally trained instructors if they were to realize the full potential of the simulators.

When Texas Instrument's Aviation Department, also based at TKI, got word that the students could use some help with simulator training, they responded immediately. Mario Arango, TI Senior Aircraft Technician, and Jason Erickson, TI corporate pilot, arrived on the scene bringing with them years of real world experience to share with the students. With their assistance and mentoring, the students are now learning the IFR 'system' and how to navigate through it.

The simulators are located in the same area where the students are building their Eagle's Nest Projects Van's RV-12 aircraft, the second build for McKinney. Inspired by what the students were accomplishing and the sense of pride and empowerment they demonstrated while working on the build, Texas Instruments also volunteered to a mentor position on the McKinney Eagle's Nest build project! Thank you Texas Instruments!!
