Default Cheap HID landing lights?

Has anyone tried a HID conversion kit in their regular Duckworks rectangular landing lights?

One like this: http://www.pilothid.com/h3.html This kit is $189.99, but similar ones can be found on ebay for $90 - $150.

They have kits for the H3 bulb Duckworks uses.

Where do you find PAR 36 lamps with a replaceable h3 blub?

Dayton,

You don't use a PAR 36 lamp. The regular Duckworks rectangular kit uses a 55 or 100w H3 lamp.

This kit appears to be a replacement for "regular" H3 lights bulb in autos, why wouldn't it work in an aircraft since the Duckworks kit is based on an automotive type headlamp.

You might be able to wig-wag the HID lamps. Look here, they claim this unit will work on HID lights:

Negatory on HID Wig Wag. These lamps have a ballast and require warm up.

From all my research, you'll end up with and expensive experiment if you try. Why aren't these all as simple as we'd want them to be??????????

Apparently the CreativAir flasher gets around this by letting the ballast "warm up" for30 seconds before starting flashing....

Check their installation instructions..... bottom of the first page...

Sounds like the DuckWorth light, this HID H-3 bulb conversion and the CreativAir flasher would be good for a bright "be seen" combination.

and yes there is a company that makes a WIG-WAG HID kit. They claim the ballasts are specialy designed for this use.

According to Duckworks, ballasts designed for use with D1S bulbs have much lower noise than others like D2S and later gens.

Default D1S Technology

When I looked into this, the aircraft HID people were all using D1S units. The same units can be found in Audi A4 and S4 cars. Wrecking yard and/or ebay should get you some ballasts and bulbs for 125-140 per side. I adapted these to a DW 100W kit and have a nice light.

From the Aerovisions website:

We use only third generation D1S bulbs for our landing and taxi lights
with integrated igniter and separate electronic ballast as pictured below. This results in greatly reduced EMI and RFI.


I'd look into the quality of the H3 HID units out there. Some have some less than stellar reputations for bulb/ballast life.
