Default AK-451 no longer FAA approved???

I was asking advice from a friend on the install of my Ameri-King AK-451 ELT. His answer was "why you installing that"? "It'll be obsolete in a year or two." What??? I've had it in a box over a year waiting to be installed.

I went to the AIrcraft Spruce website and in the overview it says, "NO LONGER FAA APPROVED". Then why the heck they have it for sale?? I searched the web and all I found was an AD ending July 2016 suggesting replacing the 451 due to the battery issues.

Anyone know the facts behind all this? I'm miffed to think I was sold an unapproved instrument still in the box for over $700!!
