Default Add'l pilot on first flight

Does anybody have the rules on using a 2nd pilot on the first flight of a new aircraft? I would like to assist our test pilot with monitoring the engine instruments on the 1st flight of our RV14A. I have searched the forums and the FAA database and I am unable to get a clear answer. Thanks all.
