Default Do I need an ammeter ground if I'm not powering the light?

Using a Vans 40 amp ammeter. If I don't want to power the internal light, do I still need to hook up both the power and the ground terminal on the back of the gauge?

I thought the power/ground terminals were just for the light, but my ammeter does not appear to be working so I'm wondering if I need to wire the power and ground terminals?

The gauge documentation is somewhat unclear, but it does say under trouble shooting to check the power and ground....

TIA
Gary

Oh ****! Well that simplifies the trouble shooting.

Thanks for taking the time to answer.
