Default Flying without empanage fairing

Can you fly without the empanage fairing? I've removed my fairing for repainting. This is on a RV8A.

Seems like a restatement of, "Can I fly this airplane while it's disassembled?"

I'm not an aerodynamicist, but my rule of thumb is that any fairing upwind and close to a control surface is probably important. Putting an elevator and rudder into turbulent flow doesn't pass my gut check. So I won't fly without that fairing.
