Tom's total investment in aircraft (20b Lancair ES) and engine comes close to $95,000
The Lancair ES kit costs $76,500.

How on earth did he manage to build one for $95,000

If memory serves me right, the cost of the ES kit when it was first introduced was "only" about $36,000, which was still too high for my budget; so I bought a 9A kit instead (March of 2000). Since then the prices have steadily risen but in their defense the number of prefabbed components, etc. have also increased and helped to reduce the build times quite a bit.

If anyone wonders why it's tough to get insurance for their lancair, they should refer to this about replacement cost! Even if you under-insure with an older hull value that kit cost has got to scare the insurance companies!
