Dry Tank Feedback on Fuel Injection Pumps

I'm interested to know what experiences people have had on fuel injection systems (mechanical or EFI) which feed return fuel back into the the pump inlet, specifically when they run a tank dry. How long does it take to restore smooth engine power after switching back to a full tank?
