Default tachometer issues

I have a Van's VTACH3500 tachometer with a Van's sending unit P/N IE 2501610. On occasion, particularly at low rpm's on the ground the tach meter goes to zero. Connections are tight. Is the cable tach drive tip suspect? Have others had this problem, and if so what was the solution?
Thanks!
RV 9A, 210 hours and flying great.
