Talking Tip: 3 lb sledge

Were you ever so frustrated by a build problem that you wanted to use a three pound sledge hammer on aluminum?

Specifically when dimpling the most forward rivet hole in HS706 where the squeezer would not fit between the flanges? And, you didn't want to lay out the bucks for a thin die or grind down your C-frame?

Care not brother. Grab your 3/16" drill bit and two chunks of 1/8" steel plate. Let the chips fly.

When you're back in control, make a setup like this and call in your trusty sledge. Careful, don't hit that finger.

Ahh, the sweet sight of success. Enjoy.

The idea for this came with Vans airfoil practice kit. Thought you might enjoy the photos.

I did use a 3 lb sledgehammer but it was to set the front seal on my crank.

+1. The combo of no hole yoke and pop rivet dimple sets were my "Go to" tools for tight dimpling.

I always called that particular hammer a 'machinists hammer'. Anyone corroborate that name?
its the one to use for vice testing. If your vice can take a full swing, then its big enough.

The machinist I know always says "grab the BFH" when he wants that one.
