Default Bendix mag removal

I have a very small leak at the mag to adapter plate interface of my left Bendix S-1200 mag, and want to replace the gasket. This is on my RV10 with an IO-540. Does anyone know if this can be done without pulling the mag cap? There is only about 1.5" clearance between the cap and the firewall. It is also something of a pita to pull the mag cover, and I am wondering just how lazy I can be. Thanks.
