Tip: Simple Riveting
Henrob Self-Pierce Riveting (HSPR) is a process of joining two or more materials from an engineered rivet, unlike conventional riveting, HSPR does not require a drilled or punched hole. HSPR joins dissimilar materials such as steel, aluminum, plastics, composites, and pre-coated or pre-painted materials. Benefits include low energy demands, fast cycle times, no heat, fumes, sparks or waste, providing a great alternative to welding and other fastening techniques.

That's friggin' COOL!
Probably way expensive, but how cool...
It's amazing how things are progressing: Originally homebuilders had to do it on their own (designs and all), then they bought engineered plans, then came "pre-punched material kits." Now we're moving from pre-punched material kits to Quick Build kits, and from QB kits to "pulled rivet only" and "no match-drilling required" kits. What could possibly be next?

holes
How are the holes cleaned up? One of the reasons that deburring is needed is that it relieves stress.
I would not think this technique would be a good idea in a aviation application.
Remember stir welding that Eclipse used? A disaster.

FSW = "disaster?"
Paul,
Why was using Friction Stir Welding a disaster for Eclipse Aviation? Don't Boeing and several other aerospace companies still use FSW in their manufacturing?

ppilotmike ~ Yes, FSW is still being used in commercial aircraft production.

Self-piercing fasteners? Seems like a fatigue problem for sure.

Eclipse was forced into Chapter 7 liquidation, not as a result of friction stir welding.

Friction Stir Welding has been used on rocket engine parts and on the Space Shuttle External Tank for many years, very successfully.

Seems like this thread is misplaced - that rivet sure isn't a tip for building airplanes. More of a way to hang signs on a signpost.

Aircraft ready to fly--no assembly required?
