The XLT starter draws more current than the NL. The NL is series wound, which reduces the current needed once the motor is turning. The permanent magnet XLT current draw can drop the bus voltage (especially with an aft mounted battery) below the threshold needed for electronic ignitions. I had a failing, but not yet inoperative magneto, XLT starter, and an Electroair ignition. The magneto would not start the engine, and the voltage to the electroair was below the threshold - no start. The XLT starter was replaced with an NL and the engine started normally. Shortly thereafter, the Slick magneto failed completely, but the engine still started. As a "Belt and suspenders" move, I installed a small battery for the Electroair, charged through a diode to separate it from the bus during start.

PS: After a second Slick magneto failure, I installed a P-Mag. Glad to be rid of magnetos.
