Default Mistake: Wing bolt washers...

You'd think at this stage of the build I'd quite making mistakes. But no. I'm building a 9A. I put washers under both the nut and bolt head on the bottom bolts. I see after the fact that on the bottom bolts the plans call for a washer only under the head of the bolt.

After tightening the bottom bolts, the bolt protrudes through the nut, but something less that a full thread.

Usually the fix is easy, but backing the bottom bolts out enough to get the nut off on a 9A looks near impossible. There's no way to get something on the back of the bolt to back it out because of the gear weldment.

Suggestions?

Default wing bolt arrangement ...

It's easy to mess up those wing bolts ...many before you have done it. Getting the bolts in is hard; getting them back out is way worse. I would call Vans and ask them if you can just leave as is.
For future reference, the washer goes under the end that will be turned/torqued ... to prevent damage to the underlying parent material. Hence they go under the nut on the top, and under the bolt head on the bottom (on nosedraggers) since that's what you turn for torquing.

If you have less than one full thread showing past the nut, it will not pass inspection.

Default Maybe ... thin nuts ?

Spruce lists thin lock nuts of two varieties. MS20142 which is an all metal stop nut of the same tensile strength and AN364 nylon thin nuts where the pieces are loaded in shear instead of tension which pretty much describes a wing nut. It's possible either one of these may work for you and if so, it's only a internet order away and real easy.

Someone else may know for sure but it's something to ask Vans about ?

Hope that helps.

Default Call vans

Michael. I did the same thing on 2 bolts. I like the thinner nylok nut solution, if you call vans can you ask if that is acceptable soln ?
