Default D/C power source converter

Any problems with using a A/C to D/C 12v converter for a power source to test lights/circuits, rather than battery? Whats the 14 volt concept all about?

So you can fully charge the 12V battery. Trying to fully charge a 12V battery with 12V ain't gonna happen.

12V will work fine for testing.

Thanks Brian, another excellent answer, from one of my many bone head questions.

The 14V reference comes from the alternator output voltage which as Brian said must be higher than the battery voltage to charge the battery.
