Default "Plastic Sump" ?

A fella put a WTB for a cold air sump on VAF last week so I sent him a photo of one I had hanging around and he said this:

"That is the Superior old style plastic sump. They were recalled because they could crack open if the engine backfired."

Anyone running one of these and if so what is your experience? A little research here shows they were called "Ryton" and they were not to be used with "wasted spark" ignition, specially on taildraggers.

...and y'all say?

Jerry

Our XP-IO-360 was supplied with one of these (early 2007) and when we took the engine back (late summer 2007) to test run, the Superior Agent fitted the replacement metal one at their/Superior's insistence - and we just had Mags.

I think your most likely purchaser would be Superior - just to take it out of circulation

I had one and was one of the first to replace it. I did the swap out myself and Superior sent me a $1k check for my time.
I had no issues with the Ryton sump before the replacement.

The only issue I had with the replacement sump was that I had to move my oil drain to a side port as the other was directly over my exhaust pipe.

A friend of mine had one on his engine a couple of years back. The engine backfired on starting and indeed it did blow the bottom out of the sump. I was told by Marlon when I bought my engine that these things were a bad idea.
