Default VOR Nav receiver

Thinking about putting in a VOR receiver to make the plane IFR capable, thought about an IFR certified GPS receiver such as the Garmin but the 4 or 5 grand is not here. But could swing a 2000 nav receiver
Been looking and I see that Becker avionics has a 2 1/4 in head with a remote mounted receiver VOR ILS GS and VAL has a Remote nav.
Val states their Nav will work with the Dynon Skyview but would not provide audio unless I couple it to my input on the V6 MGL
It will fully work with A MGL display which I don't have.
Becker will work
Already have an antenna installed. And coax run up to the panel.
Anyone out there in RV land running either with a Dynon Skyview?
Thanks
Smilin' Jack

Default Val Nav 2000

I asked Dynon if the 2000 was compatible with the D100. Here is the response: "Val says it's compatible with the SL-30 protocol so it should work"

I don't know if the Skyview is vastly different that the D100 though.....

Default Terra Nav radio & TriNav

I have a Terra Nav radio with G/S that will fit in a standard 3 1/8" hole, TRI-NavC indicator, and harness that is surplus to my needs. Unfortunately, it doesn't talk Garmin, so that is why it is surplus.. If you're interested, PM me.

If it works with the D100, it should work with the Skyview. I use the VAL INS-429 as my second VOR receiver and it works great.

I'm in your same boat and plan on going with the Garmin SL30 to tie into the Skyview 10" display. I got it used for $2800. Is that in your price range? I'm not sure how much it will cost me to have it installed and am curious where you installed your antenna and which one you got.

The Dynon does not have the programming in it to set frequencies on the Val 2000. There is some info on the Dynon forum about this. Follow the link and search the Skyview area for Val.

Jack,

"Thinking about putting in a VOR receiver to make the plane IFR capable...."

In considering your choice of IFR avionics, I would suggest that you keep in mind the FAA's plan on the VOR Minimum Operations Network (MON) plan. As the MON is implemented, a VOR may not provide the IFR access you are hoping for. The FAA's target date for the MON is only a few years out at 2020.

Some of the VORs that have deteriorating coverage are not being repaired, the minimum enroute airway altitudes are being raised. Some victor airways are being overlaid with "T" routes to provide lower GPS MEAs. With the budget cuts, timely maintenance of the VORs may be a lower priority. A few VORs have already been shut down.

You may want to do an internet search on the "VOR Minimum Operations Network" to see how the VOR coverage across the US will be affected.

A couple of sites are:

http://www.faa.gov/about/office_org/...ll/VOR_MON.pdf

http://download.aopa.org/epilot/2012...hite-Paper.pdf

Good luck.

Default ILS

For approaches, it looks like ILS will still be around for quite awhile; at least as a backup.

Some FAA information about ILS:

http://www.faa.gov/about/office_org/...ices/gbng/ils/

This recent briefing has some interesting information (ILS and VOR):

http://www.gps.gov/cgsic/meetings/2013/lawrence.pdf

Future Ground-Based Augmentation System (GBAS) and Local Area Augmentation System (LAAS). As early as 2016?:

http://www.faa.gov/about/office_org/...gnss/faq/laas/

With respect to replacing ILS, a lot seems to be riding on GBAS, including LAAS, plus the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) which adds the Russian GLONASS satellite navigation system to our GPS. How long it will take these ?replacement? programs to be fully approved, funded, and nationally-operable is likely anyone?s guess. Certainly, the ?trickle down? to general aviation is very uncertain.

My wild guess (just an opinion): Approach IFR and Enroute VOR (at least Enroute VOR above 5,000 AGL), are going to be available to general aviation for the next twenty years or so. I?m guessing we will probably see some degradation in the number of ILS Localizer and VOR-based approaches, though. After 2030, it?s anyone?s guess. Does anyone closer to the FAA?s plans have better information, or a better perspective, on the future of ILS and VOR? I?m just one pilot extrapolating from the information above and past experience.

One concern that the FAA and international community has is the vulnerability of GPS to jamming or other natural events (like extreme solar flares) that render it inoperable over wide areas. I think sole source for GPS is likely to be a long way off due to these factors.
