Default Engine dies on startup without pumping the throttle

I'm looking for some thoughts on what my engine startup symptons might indicate.

My engine is an ECI carbureted O-360 with 8.5:1 cylinders installed in a RV-7A with 950 hours on it and the attached fixed pitch Sensenich prop. After a cold startup with ambient temps of 50 degrees F or higher, the engine will fire and run for few seconds then begin to die unless I pump the throttle a couple of times after which it will catch and run for a bit then begin to die, etc.

I go through this drill 4 or 5 times before the engine finally continues to run at 800 to 1000 rpm without periodically pumping the throttle. It doesn't do this and idles normally, 600 to 700 rpm, on subsequent startups when it's warm like after a fuel stop.

Any help or thoughts are appreciated,

Mike

This is a symptom typical of worn out mags.

First thing to check is to make sure the idle mixture is adjusted properly. Sounds like it may be a little lean.

I have a Slick magneto on the left (bottom plugs) and a Lightspeed Plasma II on the right. What's the typical overhaul time for magnetos?

Thanks
