Quirky Things Seen From The Air in Your RV

I’ll start the thread with two, yes two, 70’s-80’s era McDonaldland Mayor McCheese playground hamburgers in people’s front yards. Less than five miles apart.

What is a Mayor McCheese, you ask? It’s this:

The first is on downwind for RWY 35 at my home field (52F). You can see it in GoogleMaps at:
33.046996, -97.238395
MayorM1.jpg

The second is 4.16nm heading 339 off the north end of the 52F runway.
33.121037, -97.261926
MayorM2.jpg

As soon as I properly define the word "quirky" I'd add to the thread. I might have those things plenty. :D

Quirky indeed

Culberson County, Texas is sneaky interesting and I have had many adventures there. Several years ago an ag pilot came in the office. I did not know him. He asked if I was the guy who takes pictures. When I told him I do take aerial photos he asked me if I had ever noticed this place.

DSC07206.jpg

I had not noticed it but did some research and found that is a unique and interesting site. I was able to pay some money, make a reservation and actually visit. Well worth it to see something entirely crazy and creative.

This week another guy came in the office. He is a young rancher. When I signed the document he brought he said "Oh, are you the guy who takes pictures". Yes; yes I am. It turns out he has taken some Citabria instruction. He asked me about some different Culberson County photos, and said he was only interested in tailwheel airplanes and would like to be able to fly to "the ranch."

Just one more from Culberson County.

NSA Snooping Outpost

disguised as a junk yard.

About 30 miles southeast of Houston.

Bizarre collection of dozens of large and small satellite dishes, boats, cars, travel trailers, and shipping containers.

I don't have any photos but I saw a huge, maybe 12' tall King Fu Panda in a residential yard.

I tend to over post and have probably talked about this place before. It is an artsy-fartsy deal. I usually think first about the upper right (east) building. Steel and rust and oil and broken glass and ball bearings and sweat from using the manual chain hoist.

Photos are not allowed on the tours. Too bad. The Guadalupes through the 12 foot steel doors are something to behold.

The guy also has a feminine persona. He beautifully decorated a children's hospital in El Paso with wall and ceiling murals.

Come on.... I know some of you S. Texas guys got to have a shot of the "LUECKE" sign!

Thanks Larry
Very interesting article. :)

Texas Shaped Pool at Texas Motor Speedway

Several passengers that I've given rides to over the years say they enjoyed seeing it.

You can contact KAFW tower on 135.15 and request a clockwise orbit of the speedway at 2000'. The pool is on the south end of the track at the hotel.

Copy/paste 33.031526, -97.280344 into GoogleMaps.

Culberson County, Texas is sneaky interesting...

Quick, someone grab Marty McFly's time machine. I can see a History Channel special 500 years from now saying this was some sort of ancient Texan Stonehenge type structure. :D

Ok, not exactly from the air in this photo...

image.jpg1.jpg

...but I did see it from pattern altitude and investigation revealed this dining establishment at KARG, Walnut Ridge, Arkansas:

Not an aerial photo but one you might want to check out in the future.

The story behind them is quite interesting and still a bit of a mystery.

Georgia Guidestones near Elberton, GA (granite capitol of the south).

Isnt this one the clock?

DSC06397.jpg

It is in the general area of the clock. The top of the clock is about a mile away and 2,000 feet higher, across a canyon. I'm guessing it may be associated with the 10,000 year clock in some way.

Well it isn't exactly from an RV since mine is still in storage on the mainland. And I won't post the pictures I took, but the inventor of Viagra purchased a nice area of land where I fly and built a pool to pay tribute to the source of his fortune.

Lucy the Elephant

A historic building 2 miles south of Atlantic City, NJ. Dated 19th century. I haven't been there on foot.

Lucy

Lucy the Margate elephant, in New Jersey. Cool, yet tacky. Great picture. You can go up inside it for a few dollars. Well worth it.

Do you know if there is a story behind that one Vlad? A rake of abandoned wagons pushed up a dead end and then they ripped up the track in front of it?

More Texas things

Someone earlier asked about the "LUECKE" I've flown over it hundreds of times but this picture is from Google. The airport in the lower center of the picture is 84R, just to give you some scale of the size of the letters in LUECKE.

Another quirky thing is the Oklahoma sand trap / Texas putting green.
It is located on about a 2nm final to runway 31R at the DFW International airport. Again the picture is from Google as I'm usually occupied with other duties when I fly over it.

nice collection of .......

those aren't......HOUSES are they????

...look more like small shopping malls! ( except for the pools!)

I guess things really ARE bigger in Texas!

( ah, don't send me the A/C, or tax bill please!)

and, man-made stuff is definitely the weirdest, but...ain't nature just amazing!?!?

The coal train between Leigh Creek and Port Augusta derailed near Parachilna in 2011.

500' AGL flyby at a safe distance: The train has broken into several pieces.

I only did one pass. A TV news chopper was inbound, we really didn't need to be in each others' way.

Thanks for posting that John. I too have flown over it hundreds of times as I was stationed in Texas a couple of times. It still intrigues me and I look down at it every time. I still fly over it frequently while flying for the airline and when I fly my RV to San Antone to visit my friends.. Always on the hunt for good BBQ which requires flying over the LUECKE sign!

Pic of one of the many corn mazes that are created in the Lehigh Valley.
This one is at Seiple Farms Family Owned.
Happened to pass over it on my way to Cherry Ridge Airport Restaurant one morning.
It says "Have Fun getting lost. discover lehigh valley com" http://www.seiplefarms.com/autumn.html

Found another Corn Maze while flying around Eastern PA today.
This one is located at Varner Farms in Collegeville, PA.
At the time this pic was taken they are selling their mainstay of Christmas Trees where you can cut your own.
If you look closely at the picture I took you can see people are looking at the trees and taking Horse-Drawn Wagon Rides.
Corn Maze says "FREEDOM MATTERS" on a map of the US and has a Liberty Bell and Eagle's head depicted.

Near Harrowgate, in the hills behind Adelaide, South Australia:

Someone planted trees to spell "Jesus Lives."

There's a little part of me that wonders if the current owner of the paddock bought it like that, can't see the arrangement of trees from the ground, and has no idea what they're saying.

Kinda surprised no one has posted the airplane-shaped pool at the Flying W Airport (N14), in Lumberton, NJ.

Not my photo - I used to fly over it semi-often in the KC-10 when we were doing certain approaches, but it was always on the wrong side of the turn for me to get a pic.

It doesn't get much quirkier than Salvation Mountain out in Slab City, CA.

IMG_7482-M.jpg

Finally got to fly below sea level. Landed nearby at Calipatria at minus 181' elevation.

There was a TFR over El Centro NAS. I got to see the Blue Angels practicing from a distance.

Follow the smoke trail and you can just make them out in diamond formation.

No picture (actually, I made a couple of bad ones with my phone), but I once called in a house fire from the RV. More accurately, I called the local FBO on Unicom, reported a house fire and the approximate location, and circled until the fire department arrived.

Unfortunately, it was too late, and the house was mostly consumed by fire.
