Good Afternoon,

We released G5 Software Version 8.00 to the G5 Software Download Area today.

This software update supports Service Bulletin 21107. This applies only to G5 installations which include an attached backup battery. The software changes included in this update improve the G5's ability to detect a specific battery fault condition that was identified. The SB document includes instructions for a brief confirmation of the associated settings after the software update. If an issue is discovered during this confirmation step, please contact Garmin Experimental Support as outlined in the document.

While the majority of the changes in this update are behind-the-scenes improvements, there are a couple of items worth mentioning.

Support for Smart Glide - Standalone G5 systems can support GTN Xi driven Smart Glide, providing basic Flight Director mode annunciation and autopilot coupling. All Smart Glide activity is controlled through the GTN Xi (activate/cancel). For that reason the GTN Xi Pilot's Guide is where the function of this feature is explained in detail. GTN Xi configuration information can be found in the GTN Xi Installation Manual.

Multiple Armed Flight Director Modes - This software update allows APPR and VNAV flight director modes to be armed simultaneously. This will allow the pilot to arm APPR mode earlier in the flight than possible in past software versions. The "Transition to Approach" configuration setting should be enabled on the GTN Navigator alongside this G5 software update. This setting can be found in GTN configuration mode, under GTN Setup > Navigation Features > Vertical Navigation.

Flight Control System Monitoring - This feature enables the GMC 507 internal AHRS to be used as an additional means for monitoring G5 AHRS data accuracy. This gives the GMC 507 the ability to disconnect the autopilot, if there is a disagreement between its internal sensors, and the G5. A pitch/roll calibration of the GMC 507 is required upon enablement, in addition to entering a yaw offset, if applicable. This can be enabled in the flight controls menu in configuration mode.

Changes made from version 7.10 to 8.00:

  • Added support for Smart Glide
  • Added ability to simultaneously arm flight director VNAV along with GP or GS mode
  • Added additional data to SD card flight data logging
  • Added notification of missing/undetected battery (requires configuration change)
  • Added support for GMC 507 flight control monitors
  • Added menu option to diagnostic page to access AFCS diagnostic log
  • Added support for LP+V CDI scale
  • Improved AFCS operation with blocked pitot tube
  • Adjusted appearance of dual cue flight director
  • General improvements to system operation
  • Includes update to GMC 507 software version 3.10
  • Includes update to GAD 13 software version 2.10
  • Includes update to GAD 29C software version 2.20
  • Includes GSA 28 software version 4.90/2.20
  • Includes GAD 29 software version 3.40
Thanks,

Justin

If you have a G3X and did the 9.0 update, the G5 is already updated, correct?
