Two weeks ago we made an overnight trip to Indianapolis to attend our daughter-in-law's baby shower (will be our first grand daughter). Since we had other commitments at home we decided to leave in the morning, attend the baby shower in the afternoon, then return the next day. A quick 700 nm each way trip made possible by our RV9A. Weather forecast was not good, a cold front was on the west side of Appalachian Mountains crossing our route, low clouds and rain in a wide area along our route. We filed IFR for a quick fuel/rest stop at the mid-point east of Atlanta.
Departing Spruce Creek (Daytona Beach area)
Somewhere in Georgia, over a lower cloud layer and see "glory".
Atlanta Center warned us about some bad weather ahead (the first patch of rain north west of Knoxville).
Now we got into the main rain band. ATC gave us deviation for the yellow area but took that clearance away in a few minutes then vectored us to avoid conflicting traffic. Air was bumpy for only a minute or so, we did not get heavy rain neither.
Half an hour later we got out of cloud. After we passed, ATC began routing other flights through our path. We were doing 145-150 kts true, but only see 123 kts ground.
