Louisiana and Texas - IFR made it possible

The last two weeks we went to Louisiana to visit our son and did some work in another city. Unless weather is very bad I always prefer flying my little RV vs commercial or driving. On some of my long trips VFR was sufficient to make it. However, it is not the case on this trip. An IFR ticket with a well equipped RV made the trip un-eventful. We got to keep our schedule and at the same time had a lot of fun.

Day 1: Destination: Lake Charles, LA, distance: 657 nm.

We took off around 7 am to avoid conflict with the departure of Spruce Creek Saturday morning fly-out. First stop is 48 nm away for the $3.37/g fuel. Weather was good with high overcast and very low scatter clouds.

The next stop is our preferred stop on our way to the west - DeFuniak Springs (54J). The fuel is cheap and it right at the corner of Eglin restricted airspace. Of course to reach there we had to pass several MOAs and west of DeFuniak Springs is also MOAs and restricted airspace. However, V198-241 passes right by and it is a way to go to the west. In Florida if you don't want to fly through MOAs it will be very hard to go anywhere (see sectional). I filed direct and got my direct right through all the MOAs.

There are precipitation at the beginning of the route and the rest is clear. However, there are covered by thick layer of clouds. DeFuniak Spring is clear though.

On this trip we had mostly headwind. I usually fly slow, 60-65% power and 135-140 kts. Will the headwind I have to add a little faster to counter the headwind (reduce the headwind influence).

After 30 mins in solid clouds we were riding right over it and once in a while in and out of clouds (click the photo blow to go to Google photo then click the photo to play).


Sky cleared up halfway to our stop.

After a quick stop we took off and called Eglin Approach (Air Force) for our IFR clearance. Again, we got a direct.

The gentle headwind turned stronger and I pushed in throttle a little more (156 kts true).

In less than 3 hours and our original ETA we landing at Lake Charles. The linemen were very helpful. They helped us unload and tied down the airplane. Freeman Jet Center does not charge landing, handling and tiedown fees. I always have them top off the fuel no matter how much more they charge.
 
Lake Charles and Alexandria

We stay overnight with our son and after a nice lunch at Luna with his friends we departed for Alexandria. Lake Charles is a ARSA airport. They require you to get a squawk code and talk to approach/departure before enter/exit (legally you don't have to, but..) I decided to file IFR for this 80 nm trip since it no more work on my part.
The restricted airspace south of the airport is cold. Polk Approach (Army) let us go right through. On the approach to the airport we got to see a fake air field with a fake jet (there are other equipment too).

Before we enter the traffic pattern (visual approach) we were cleared to landing. A regional jet requested for departure and was told to wait for us. I tried my best to get out of way faster.

My wife had some work to do in Alexandria for the week. Friday afternoon we filed IFR and went back to Lake Charles.

Alexandria and Lake Charles

Alexandria airport used to be England Air Force base (named after a Lt Col and not the country) before the base was closed in 1992. It is a big facility for such a small town.

Million Air that also owned by Mr. Freeman does not charge any fees. I filled up at the self serve and it is very reasonable.

In this part of country they grow cotton and rice. I am no expert and am not sure what crop is grown here. The plow pattern is neat.

Lake Charles

When we got to Lake Charles, the lighting was right and my wife took some nice pictures. Here is the downtown and lake front convention center. We enjoy a after dinner walk along the lake front.

San Antonio trip

Sunday is the time to send my son to San Antonio for his annual convention. I filed IFR and got a route based on vectored airway. Of course busy Huston airspace and a lot MOAs around San Antonio are the reasons. Fortunately ForeFlight load the route right in and I did not have type it. Copy down the clearance was easy since I have already had it. It would be hard since I am not familiar with the nav aides and waypoints.

My return trip was VFR since I wanted to have a Huston downtown tour. I choose to use the east west flyway between George Bush and William Hobby. There was a TFR at Ellington that was just south of the flyway. Talked to FSS and approach in the air to make sure I am okay to fly through.

Ellington ATIS gave the airboss frequency, so I was enjoying the communication between performers and the airboss while flying through the area. Although it is close I never could see any airplane at the airshow.

On Thursday I flew back to pick my son up. By the time he texted me to report bad weather I was already on my way. This time they let me fly through the entire route, no direct granted.

IFR approach

When I got close I got to pick either RNAV 32 or VOR 32 and I picked RNAV. ATIS called for landing runway 9 and tower let me pick 9 or 14 (less favor the wind). I picked 14 so I did not have to circle as much. My iPad showed a lot of towers and I was low.

The return trip was IFR as well. My son got to fly and he is a very low time VFR pilot. It was quite an experience for him.

Lake Charles had a TFR for the Chennault Airshow practice. Chennault is one of the two towered airports in Lake Charles. They are only 6 nm apart. This afternoon it was raining and no practice. It turned the weekend weather was worse.

We flew back to Florida on Saturday. I filed for Lake Charles to DeFuniak Springs (2 hr 45 min), then, DeFuniak Springs to Palatka (1 hr 50 min). The last 40 nm will be VFR.
What left of hurricane Patricia (now depression) caused a lot of rain and thunderstorms. It was coming to Lake Charles on Saturday morning. We planned to depart shortly before the weather turn bad. Unfortunately, it arrived a little early. When we were loading we could see the rain were coming.

As soon as we finished loading, the rain started and it was hard! We went back in and waited for 20 min (still 20 min before our planned departure). Borrowed an umbrella and got in the airplane. Seats and some of our luggage were wet. I got our clearance and departed in the light rain.

In this part of country they grow cotton and rice. I am no expert and am not sure what crop is grown here. The plow pattern is neat.

Rice. Those are levees built to the contour of the land. They allow the farmer to keep the correct amount of water over the rice. They grow some cotton in South Louisiana but rice, soybeans and sugar cane are the main crops.

Love seeing videos of IFR approaches. I should record some of my own approaches one day as well.
 
We stay overnight with our son and after a nice lunch at Luna with his friends we departed for Alexandria. Lake Charles is a ARSA airport. They require you to get a squawk code and talk to approach/departure before enter/exit (legally you don't have to, but..) I decided to file IFR for this 80 nm trip since it no more work on my part.
The restricted airspace south of the airport is cold. Polk Approach (Army) let us go right through. On the approach to the airport we got to see a fake air field with a fake jet (there are other equipment too).

Great write-up, I live in Louisiana and we go a ton of rain this weekend. I was glad to be on the ground. Your lucky that your kids want to fly, mine are ambivalent to flying. My son says if I die, the RV 7A goes on E-Bay the next day. Kids know where to place the knife.
