Oil Cooler/Oil Temps

When I installed my 0235 C-1 in the RV3 I put on a vans oil cooler on #4
rear baffle. My oil temps were low only getting to 175-180 with a plate
over rear of cooler. This was in Sept with warm but not extremely hot
days of July and Aug like we have here in southern tenn. I removed the oil
cooler due to a suspected leak and flew without it on a 3 hour 500 mile
round trip cross country this sat. The temp was around 70 degrees. On the
outbound 250miles I saw 202 degrees and coming back in the warmer
afternoon it got up to 205. Here is my plan and would like any advice
anyone has to offer. I sm going to install a remote oil filter and take out
the screen leaving the empty screen housing in place. I can do this as i
have a spring and plunger instead of vernitherm and will plumb filter
where the cooler was previously connected. The filter CH108 will be
on the firewall using a 6061 billet racing adapter and will be shrouded
with a 1 1/2 inch scat hose blowing air from back of upper baffle. If needed
I will also fabricate a heat sink that clamps around filter. If I can keep my
max hot day temp 190-200 I would much prefer to have a good oil filter
than a oil cooler.

Thanks
JM

Oil Cooler temps

Mine ranges 180-205F, winter-summer. Lyc 0-320, 150hp. Cooler is mounted in the standard location, on the baffling behind cyl #4.

One thing to keep in mind with most of these small Lycomings, the oil temp-probe location is immediately downstream of the cooler, where oil is at its coolest. I would love to know what the typical oil temp is just *prior* to entering the cooler?

That's a good point. One encouraging thing is on the 70 degree day on
a 250mile one way trip I saw a max of 205 with the oil cooler disconnected.
i am hopeing the remote oil filter well shrouded and blasted with cool air
will be enough cooling to maybe max out at 210-215 on the hottest of days.

Oiltemp ?

O 320/160 HP in a RV9 shows only 130 deg F after a 20 min. warm up on these days with 30 F. And it wouldn't get much more after T/O and 20 min level flight. Standard Vans oil cooler behind cyl. 4 baffle.

Any suggestion what could be wrong?
Thanks Pit

Is this a new airplane or did things change suddenly? If it was working fine
with more normal oil temps it could be a stuck vernitherm routing all the
oil thru cooler all the time. If this is the problem you should see the oil
temps rise on a longer flight. It of course could be the transducer. What
temps did you show during the hot days of summer?
